Join me, Helen, in uncovering the joy of art through one of my personalised art classes. Whether it be for a class within a group setting in one of my workshops, or you are looking for personal tuition. Designed with both the budding artist and the seasoned creator in mind, each session is an intimate dive into the world of creativity, where I share my passion and techniques with you. It’s more than just learning to paint or draw; it’s about unlocking your own creative potential and finding your unique voice in a supportive and inspiring setting.
This art class is designed for beginners, those who have convinced themselves they can’t paint or that art isn’t for them, and for the more experienced artists looking to try something different.
In this workshop, you’ll learn to utilise a variety of techniques with acrylic paints. You’ll be encouraged to create textures using paint, pastels, pens, card, cling film, bubble wrap, PVA glue, and salt, aiming to produce a simple abstract painting.
The approach encourages ‘letting the paint do the work for you’ through numerous painting methods, allowing you to decide the complexity of your final piece while working with this highly forgiving medium.
By the end of the day’s session, you’ll have created an A3 piece of artwork, ready for framing.
The day begins with a brief overview of the methods you might like to try, with examples available for you to see and touch. Keeping this in mind, you will initially prepare a flat color base for your collage on a pre-stretched board.
Then, you’ll start creating your own abstract collage paper. With guidance, you’ll be able to choose the painting techniques that best suit your vision.
In the afternoon, with your dry, unique sheet of collage paper ready, you’ll cut and collage pieces onto the flat colored base you prepared earlier, using PVA glue to achieve a satin finish. The process is straightforward, with the goal being to enjoy yourself while learning various painting methods. The colorful, textural outcomes will boost your confidence to continue exploring acrylics in the future.
Tea, coffee, and fruit juices are available throughout the session, and music too, if you like. Very close by is The Farthing Gallery Tearoom, where you can pre-order lunch or a cream tea, or you’re welcome to bring your own food if you prefer.

Remember scraperboard? This is almost the same, but you get to create your own unique scraper board with oil pastels and ink. Your results will be original, colourful and detailed, you can create one or several pieces of artwork as you experiment and experience this fun mixed media class.
You can bring you own ideas and inspirational material though some will be provided. The subject matter and the reference material that you choose is completely up to you, although this is a medium that best suits animals, birds, fish, still life subjects and flowers – landscapes can work well too. Or you could take a more abstract route that will allow you to concentrate solely on colour and texture, without the worry of trying to make something ‘realistic’.
By the end of the day’s session you will have created a mounted mixed media picce of artwork ready for framing (A4 mount provided), or you could make several greetings cards (blank cards provided). It’s entirely up to you.
The day starts with a quick chat about your reference choices, then we will trace your Image onto thick paper.
You will then be set free to colour and draw to you hearts. content, following your tracing or freehand drawing if you prefer.
Then you will paint over your whole drawing with black Indian ink (the scary part) so bring an apron or an
old shirt to cover up.
In the afternoon you will have all the tools you need to scrape back through the ink layer to your beautifully coloured base layer underneath, adding your own lines and textures to suit your final image choice and natural mark making tendencies.
It sounds simple, and it really is, the results you get will really make you feel like an artist.

One to one art tuition is perfect for people who need support from an experienced artist and tutor, those who possibly lack the confidence within a group session or, are puzzled by the vast choice of artist’s materials on offer.
I can provide 1:2:1 lessons where we can explore art techniques and materials that will give you the knowledge and confidence to use. Watercolours, acrylics, oils, gouache, mixed media, pencil, pastels.
Use these materials to then create landscapes, still life, animals, and portraiture, producing work from the abstract to the representational.
You choose, you learn at your own relaxing pace, as the sessions are tailored around you.
If you buy through the website, I will email you to organise a suitable time and date. I shall then send you some of the details prior to you first session.
All materials are included in the first session and any subsequent session where we plan to use a different medium.
